Getting started with bird watching

Bird watching is a popular and fast growing hobby. There are several ways to go about it. While many people get interested in birds from an interest in photography, there are many prominent birders who do not take photographs at all. Photographing can help you with documenting and identifying unknown birds but you can do a lot with just a decent pair of binoculars. While producing high resolution publication quality images might require expensive cameras and lenses, one can get decent enough (enough to identify birds, post them on web for showing to friends with affordable super zoom compacts. The minimum things you need are a pair of binoculars and a field guide like Birds of the Indian subcontinent by Grimmett and Inskipp.
While travelling to new places will bring you face to face with new kinds of birds, you can find a large number of birds in your own backyards with very little equipment. It is very easy to watch and photograph birds in sanctuaries, there is greater thrill to be derived from finding birds in your own back yard
